Why would someone want to install old OS when every one runs after the latest and greatest???
You really need to have a compelling reason to install this old OS. Here are some possibilities.
(1) You have some ancient email backups which can only be opened in ancient email clients. Outlook Express anyone?
(2) You have some freeware software that you love so much and hard to find it’s equal for free these days.
(3) You have an ancient computer you wouldn’t let go for the sentiments attached to it. And want to give it a life.
(4) You want to give your daughter a computer just to improve her typing skills.
(5) You would just love to go back 20 years and see how simple life used to be back then.
For the rest of your questions, the simple answer is – if you have modern hardware, don’t even think about old software. From your wording, you sound like a non-technical person. Even if you manage to install this, you would run into numerous other issues. So, my sincere advice, just let this one go.

This is an old operating system which has more in common with MS-DOS then it does with the latest systems around. If you want to run it on hardware which is compatible with its age, burn the iso to CD. Don not follow the “how to install it” video. That tells you to create a bootable usb with Rufus. Rufus from any age won’t do it. If you w3ant to install from USB. Create a DOS boot USB with all of the DOS commands and copy all the CD (from with the iso) files to the USB. Boot from the USB. You will need to create a Boot partition on the hard drive. It needs to be the first, so use a blank drive. It needs to be FAT16 or FAT32. It also needs to be set active. SYS the hard drive. Then copy the install directory to the hard drive.
You will need to find a Win98 USB driver for memory sticks and copy that across as well. Win98 only had limited usb drivers, memory sticks wasn’t included. NUSB3.EXE is one such driver. Your target pc must be able to MBR boot (legacy boot) and you may have to operate at default setting for things like to the display. Most drivers available have not been updated for Win98. When it comes to installation, the target machine should have no more than 512Mb of memory. Microsoft didn’t account for memory size getting so large as they are today. If your target machine has more than this, there are web articles on modifying the SYSTEM.INI file to prevent Win98 going into error at bootup due to too much memory.
To be honest, it would be easier to run Win98 in a virtual machine. The resource requirements for Win98 are such that even modest pc can run Win98 in virtual mode and if done full screen, you would barely notice that it was virtual. Only problem with this is that all the hardware is virtual. If it needs to be run as a real machine, you could well find that the modern pc architecture prevents you from doing so. - Comment Feed for this Post
